Family History Centres of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS)

The Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City, Utah has actively collected genealogical information from all over the world since 1894.  There is no charge made to use the records at a Family History Center, but there is a small charge for photocopies and printouts from microfilm.  There is also a charge of $6.00 per reel to cover postage costs when borrowing microfilm from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.  Volunteer staff will assist by providing various records and resources but are not able to do extensive research or photocopying work and do not do research through the mail.

Researchers may use the most recent version of the Family Search computer programme  ( that is an automated system of family history data stored electronically.  The Ancestral File has well over 1,000,000 family histories donated by more than 100,000 genealogists throughout the world.  A computer software programme called Personal Ancestral File or PAF helps the family historian organize and process their research data.  The International Genealogy Index or IGI contains approximately 250,000,000 names extracted from birth, christening and marriage records from over ninety countries.  Names for the United States and Canada are grouped in one file.  A list of approximately 2,000,000 microfilm and microfiche that contain well over two billion names and over 250,000 reference compilations with ~1,000 books added each month is found in the Family History Library Catalogue that is indexed by author/title, locality, surname and subject.  This catalogue provides the call numbers needed to order microfilm or microfiche on interlibrary loan from Salt Lake City.
